Germany Trip - May 29th, 2002

After a couple of cool, rainy days, we were happy to wake up to bright
sunlight and warm weather. We took this opportunity to enjoy the view of
Lake Walchensee before we set off for the day. Next we traveled to the
village of Andechs to visit its famous church and sample the excellent beer
brewed by the local monks. We sat outside and ate our lunch of pork,
potato salad, sauerkraut and HUGE soft pretzels. (All are staples of the
Bavarian diet!!) We drank our beer while looking out at the countryside
from our mountaintop terrace! After lunch we visited the famous church
which was unfortunately being renovated! We stopped in Garmisch on the way
back, and then had dinner at a restaurant on Lake Walchensee.

The village of Andechs, at the summit of the
700m (2300 ft) high Holy Mountain of the same name, is not only the destination
of pilgrimages to the local church, but also of many less spiritual trips to the
Braustuberi, where visitors can refresh themselves with a glass or two of the
excellent beer brewed by the local monks.

before heading back to Lake Walchensee for dinner. We ate at a little
restaurant on the lake and then walked back to our apartment at Haus Reindl.
