Germany Trip - May 28th, 2002

Tuesday October 04, 2005

After a few short stops for shopping and lunch, we spent most of the day in the city of Munich or "Munchen."  We toured the historic section of Marienplatz which was the town's salt- and corn- market in medieval times.  The origins of Munich itself lie with a handful of monks who built their abbey there, giving the place its name (from the word for 'monks') and its heraldic arms.  We also toured the concentration camp museum in the nearby town of Dachau.

Here's a quick menu to the various picture sets:

  • On The Way- We made a few stops on the way to Munich to shop and eat.

On The Way

Here is a view of the staircase at Haus Reindl. Our apartment was right up these stairs.

We stopped in Garmisch for a little shopping.

We stopped at this restaurant for lunch before heading to Munich for the day.

Here's another shot of the beautiful stove in the back of the restaurant.

Munich

The most impressive sight in this town was probably the Glockenspiel in the center of the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall).  The marvellous figures spring into action at 11am, noon, 5 and 9pm.  Unfortunately we didn't get to witness the moving figures...we just missed them at 9pm!  We sent Bryan running with the video camera, but he didn't get there in time.  Oh well!  We visited some other interesting buildings and enjoyed our dinner at the Augustinerbrau.  This is the oldest and most celebrated brewery in Munich and was founded by Augustinian monks in 1328.  It currently occupies two 19th century houses with picturesque facades.

This is the Glockenspiel.

We spent some time shopping for souvenirs and bought Brandon some Lederhose. Bryan's mom is going to knit Brandon a sweater like this to match!

I guess we have to wait until we have a girl to buy this!

We ate dinner here in the Augustinerbrau.

Here is a view of the patio from inside the restaurant.

Munich at night.
