Germany Trip - May 26th, 2002

Tuesday October 04, 2005

Today we visited the famous Schloss Neuschwanstein, a fairy-tale castle that has been the inspiration of countless toy models, book illustrations and film sets. (Including the Disney World castle!)  The castle is situated on top of a mountain near the town of Hohenschwangau and overlooks the Schwansee (Swan Lake.)  The climb to the top requires a 10 minute bus ride and another 20 minutes of walking up a steep cobblestone path.  On the way up, we stopped to cross a narrow, wooden bridge that overlooks the castle and a beautiful waterfall.  The view was breathtaking, but walking on the bridge was a little scary.  (OK...VERY SCARY!)  We made a few stops on the way back to eat dinner, feed some swans and check out some Bavarian cows!!

Here's a quick menu to the various picture sets:

  • The Drive Back- We made several stops on our way back to Lake Walchensee.

Schloss Neuschwanstein

Set amidst magnificent mountain scenery on the shores of the Schwansee (Swan Lake), this fairy tale castle was built 1869-86 for the eccentric Bavarian King Ludwig II.  The pale grey granite castle, which draws on a variety of historical styles, is a steep 20 minute walk from the nearby village of Hohenschwangau and offers spectacular views of the surrounding scenery.

On the bridge.

Walking up to the castle. It was hard work!

Playing around on the castle while we waited for our tour to start.

View from the castle.

Taking a break from our walk down to pose for a shot.

Scenic overlook on the way down to Hohenschwangau.

On the bus...Brandon wanted to hold on too!!

Some people chose to take a carriage ride up to the castle. We just stopped for a picture!

The Drive Back

We hoped to see the inside of this church, but a concert was being held there that night.

Posing in a field of wildflowers.

There are fields like this all over Germany.

We convinced our waitress to join us for a picture.

Outside of the Bavarian restaurant.

We stopped at this lake for a closer look.

The swans came right up to greet us. They are REALLY big close up...and a little scary too!

Uncle Bernd fed the swans some good bread...much to Elke's dismay!

We stopped to get a closer look at these cows. Uncle Bernd called them "walking Schnitzels" -- he's a vegetarian!!
